Jihad and McWorld
Jihad and McWorld are two struggling competitive forces differing in many ways when it comes to goals and methods, but they are also alike in many ways as well.
Jihad
The term Jihad is basically used when referring to holy war that distinguishes two types of fight: the inner struggle that must lead every believers against his own weaknesses and the external war waged against infidels. Oussama Ben Laden has called for Jihad against the United States and its allies because they were coming against the way of life advocated by the Islamic extremists. Islamic Jihad is a Palestinian Islamist party, which means ‘’holy war for Islam’’. This organization covers a multitude of small extremist armed groups that are willing to sacrifice human lives (their own as well as the ones of others) in order to accomplish their purpose. The terrorist attack against the World Trade Center is a great example of the use of Kamikazes for the accomplishment of attacks. Their purpose is also to go back in the past, a time they consider pure because for them, modernity is seen as evil and against Allah.
McWorld
McWorld directly bumps heads with the world of Al Qaida and jihad. The concept appeared in the 1950 and 1960 and was based on American culture and provoke cultural and political resistance in the form of Jihad and terrorist attacks like 9/11. It does not value religion as much as Islamic extremists. The main goal of McWorld is to assure growth and make money. Many American-based businesses and trademarks are linked to this attitude: McWorld. In real life and also virtually via Internet and technology, every developed country is exposed to American culture for example, McDonalds restaurants. This is the main reason why extremist islamic group like Al Qaida protest against this American exposure.
Besides McWorld, the process of hybridization has become more important especially with language, food, music and clothes. In the end, Jihad, McWorld and the process of hybridization bring a manifestation of sameness across the globe but in their own way.
